REVIEW: Miles Kane – Don’t Forget Who You Are

dfwyaSince the inception of The Little Flames, a graduation as frontman of The Rascals in 2007 and the explosion of his solo debut record in 2011, Miles Kane has catapulted from Alex Turner’s fellow Last Shadow Puppet into an indie-rock superstar. Now in 2013, fresh from rubbing shoulders with the Mod-Father himself Paul Weller, Miles Kane’s latest offering has an insurgent maturity that will appeal to an eclectic audience of cult fans and radio listeners.

It’s a well known fact that an artists second record can be a lot more difficult than their first, but Kane’s Don’t Forget Who You Are has no such trouble. It’s a natural progression from 2011’s Colour Of The Trap and will have fans’ tongue’s wagging even more.

Collectively, the record has it’s outrageous bellow-the-chorus-at-the-top-of-your-voice moments as well as some deeper intimate moments that let us peer into the mind of Miles Kane. The lead single from the album that we were treated to back in February, Give Up, is angry and passionate as Miles reveals his disenchantment with dating super-models (A problem not many of us will have in our life time I’m sure). Album opener Taking Over is one of the standout tracks from the eleven song ensemble. It’s Miles Kane at his very best. Taking Over is catchy, infectious, charged with emotion and backed by some mesmerising riffs as well as colossal mid-song solo. Proceeding this is the pre-order bonus title track Don’t Forget Who You Are. This is truly one for the fans and has one of the biggest chorus’ you could ever imagine.

More intimate moments come in the form of Out Of Control as Miles can be heard crooning about the enigma of love backed with an acoustic guitar and these feelings are echoed within Fire In My Heart.

With Don’t Forget Who You Are, Miles Kane has accomplished a feel-good Saturday night album. You’re drinking with your mates, you’ve got your best clobber on, you’re ready to go out and party and the album is filling you with all of the anticipation and excitement of  the night ahead. And don’t forget, the more intimate moments of the album are there to pick you up on the Sunday morning.

Finally, just a note to mention how good Miles’ band mates are. The introduction of George Moran has proved instrumental considering his guitar work and backing vocals are both equally astute.

The View From The Music gives this album an 8.5/10

The album is out on Monday 3rd June, pre-order here.

Track Of The Day: By The Sea – Eveline

If your dreams had a soundtrack, Eveline would be the standout track. Light and airy and beautifully psychedelic, the Wirral band have produced an anthemic track that makes it self at home in a wonderfully poetic album. With Bill Ryder-Jones on board, the band is just going to grow from strength to strength, keep your eyes peeled for By The Sea.

We recommend that you should buy the album HERE!

Track Of The Day: Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – We No Who U R

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds are back! And what a welcome return. One of the finest lyricists of the modern day has returned with the rather colloquially titled ‘We No Who U R’. It’s dark, atmospheric and has Nick Cave stamped all over it. He’s back.

Here’s the full press release:

We No Who U R is the first track to be taken from the upcoming Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album Push the Sky Away [February 2013].  At the heart of Push the Sky Away is a naturalism and warmth that makes it the most subtly beautiful of all the Bad Seeds albums. The contemporary settings of myths, and the cultural references that have time-stamped Nick’s songs of the twenty-first century mist lightly through details drawn from the life he observed around his seaside home, through the tall windows on the album’s mysterious and ambiguous cover.

The songs on this album took form in a modest notebook with shellac covers over the course of almost a year. The notebook is a treasured analogue artefact but the internet is equally important to Nick: Googling curiosities, being entranced by exotic Wikipedia entries “whether they’re true or not”. These songs convey how on the internet profoundly significant events, momentary fads and mystically-tinged absurdities sit side-by-side and question how we might recognise and assign weight to what’s genuinely important.

Push the Sky Away was produced by Nick Launay and recorded at La Fabrique, a recording studio based in a 19th Century mansion in the South of France, where the walls of the main studio are lined with an immense collection of classical vinyl.

We No Who U R sets this album in our time; we’re living with the consequences of actions and innovations that seemed so progressive in the industrial era. There’s a calm assessment of the gravity of the situation, and humility. This whole album has a generosity of spirit that’s established here by a children’s choir singing “we know there’s no need to forgive.”

We No Who U R is  available  from 3rd December. The track comes as a download with every pre-order album purchase via nickcave.com or iTunes. We No Who U R will also be available as a single download from all digital retailers.

Push the Sky Away, the fifteenth studio album by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds will be released in February 2013 on CD/ Ltd CD-DVD / Vinyl / Digital.

THE HORRORS Announce Details of ‘Higher’

horrors higher

“One of the pleasures of remixing is seeing how other people construct their music. Re-arranging the bricks in The Horrors wall of sound was a particular joy.” Andrew Weatherall

The Horrors release a very special, limited edition, deluxe boxed set of the singles and videos from Skying, available digitally on December 3rd followed by a physical release in March 2013. The set includes covers, reworkings and remixes from Andrew Weatherall, Seahawks, Connan Mockasin and more.

“We were driving through the deserts of California when we hatched the plan to release a boxed set of the singles from Skying, unaware that it would balloon into the monster that it did. We started off small, just one version per single. However, through chance encounters and wanting to involve more people whose music excited us, the box soon grew into an impressive collection of sonic tapestries and hypnotic grooves and it became apparent that this was no longer about the singles. It was now about this new music which had used the different elements of Skying as a springboard to other ideas. We encouraged everyone involved to be as obtuse as possible, to get as far away from the original source material as they could. The results are stunning, and I think it’s just a shame we couldn’t have done more.”

Tom Furse, The Horrors

The box set features an eclectic collection of musicians, DJs and producers from widely contrasting genres but all fans and friends of The Horrors:- Connan Mockasin, Seahawks, Andrew Weatherall, Blanck Mass, Peaking Lights, Cherrystones, Chris Watson, Daniel Avery, JTC and Andy Blake.

“It was an honour to create these remixes and they’re probably the most enjoyable we’ve ever done. Having parts from the entire album to work with was an amazing luxury. To choose from the myriad sounds that spilled out from the folders was like walking into a psychedelic sweet shop with all the flavours of the universe on display.” –Pete Fowler, Seahawks

Amongst the collection’s many diverse interpretations is Chris Watson’s reworking of ‘Dive In’ Watson, one of the world’s leadingsound recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena and founder of post punk outfit Cabaret Voltaire, describes the field recordings he  included in his intriguing mix:

“I used Weddell seals singing at the intro recorded under the Antartic sea ice. The rhythms of the Humbolt current around the Galapagos Islands recorded with DPA hydrophones. Singing grey seals recorded out on the Farne Islands, Northumberland and the processed voices of Orca, killer whales, recorded in the sea of Norway.”

The images that make up the cover and boxed set package were created by celebrated young artist Leif Podhajsky who has previously artworked releases by Lykke Li, Tame Impala and Grimes.

About the Artists

Connan Mockasin

Connan Mockasin has a deliciously off-kilter and gloriously idiosyncratic worldview. His ingenious approach to invention and a unique charm caught the attention of Erol Alkan, who signed Connan to his label Phantasy. Connan is most known for his eccentricity, his miasma of psychedelic tangents, jazz interludes and echoing guitars.

Cherrystones

Cherrystones is the sound of psychedelia-soundtracks-folk-rock-prog-noise-moog-AND-library-records. Music that takes its inspiration from rock n roll and applied in a hip-hop context. For the last two years he has been amassing the choicest cuts that could very possibly put Madlib to shame.

Chris Watson (The Pressure Ridges)

Watson is one of the world’s leading recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena, he edits his field recordings into a filmic narrative. The unearthly groaning of ice in an Icelandic glacier is a classic example of, in Watson’s words, putting a microphone where you can’t put your ears. His works ‘Weather Report’ was named in The Guardian’s 1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die List. He is previously known for forming post punk outfit Cabaret Voltaire.

Daniel Avery

While Daniel Avery may be better known for his residency behind the decks at London institution fabric, he is fast rising as a respected producer. His induction into the fabriclive mix series provides compelling evidence of this, a dizzy trip that highlights Avery’s skill as both a curator and a creator of some of the most inventive and forward thinking electronic sounds emerging today.

Blanck Mass

Blanck Mass is Benjamin John Power, a young musician in thrall to Carl Sagan, Ennio Morricone and the infinity of nature. His work is themed around complexity of the natural world. The debut album ‘Blanck Mass’ was produced at home in London 2010 featuring a collection of warm analogue synths, heavy sub and deep drones.

Seahawks

Seahawks were formed by Jon Tye & Pete Fowler back in 2009. Spurred on by their love of Yacht Rock and Cosmic Synth they somehow fused the two, resulting in a series of now super rare 12’s compiled on the Ocean Trippin CD. They remixed Badly Drawn Boy and Born Blonde, before releasing the ‘Another Summer With Seahawks’ collection and a 7” featuring pop sensation Autre Ne Veut. ‘Invisible Sunrise’ followed in 2011 along with lots more remixes.

Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall’s extraordinary twenty-five year career in music has been characterized by a series of unique partnerships. He has released nineteen albums, thirty or so EPs and singles plus more than two hundred and fifty remixes.

Andy Blake

Founded the legendary Dissident label famous for releasing analogue oddities on quality vinyl pressings from emerging as well as established artists. Now sadly defunct, Blake continues pushing music boundaries as a dj remixer.

JTC

Tadd Mullinix makes spaced-out house tracks as JTC (James T Cotton), one of his many guises devoted to a specific production style. This particular alias debuted in 2001 on Ghostly International with the “Mind Your Manners” single. He has since appeared on Ghostly’s State of the Union compilation and released another 4 EPs and album titles ‘Like No One’ in 2008.

Track Of The Day: Dead Sons – Hangman

‘Remember remember, the 5th of November’ is how Dead Sons announced their latest single ‘Hangman’, and it is certainly not one to forget about! Taken from their forthcoming debut album ‘The Hollers and The Hymns’, the single represents a real coming of age for the band. Their honed sinful indie sound is more US desert than UK city, it’s menacing and delightfully monopolising and is epitomised within ‘Hangman’.

‘The Hollers and The Hymns’ has not received and official release date but we are sure it is on the horizon, we can’t wait any longer.
