THE HORRORS Announce Details of ‘Higher’

horrors higher

“One of the pleasures of remixing is seeing how other people construct their music. Re-arranging the bricks in The Horrors wall of sound was a particular joy.” Andrew Weatherall

The Horrors release a very special, limited edition, deluxe boxed set of the singles and videos from Skying, available digitally on December 3rd followed by a physical release in March 2013. The set includes covers, reworkings and remixes from Andrew Weatherall, Seahawks, Connan Mockasin and more.

“We were driving through the deserts of California when we hatched the plan to release a boxed set of the singles from Skying, unaware that it would balloon into the monster that it did. We started off small, just one version per single. However, through chance encounters and wanting to involve more people whose music excited us, the box soon grew into an impressive collection of sonic tapestries and hypnotic grooves and it became apparent that this was no longer about the singles. It was now about this new music which had used the different elements of Skying as a springboard to other ideas. We encouraged everyone involved to be as obtuse as possible, to get as far away from the original source material as they could. The results are stunning, and I think it’s just a shame we couldn’t have done more.”

Tom Furse, The Horrors

The box set features an eclectic collection of musicians, DJs and producers from widely contrasting genres but all fans and friends of The Horrors:- Connan Mockasin, Seahawks, Andrew Weatherall, Blanck Mass, Peaking Lights, Cherrystones, Chris Watson, Daniel Avery, JTC and Andy Blake.

“It was an honour to create these remixes and they’re probably the most enjoyable we’ve ever done. Having parts from the entire album to work with was an amazing luxury. To choose from the myriad sounds that spilled out from the folders was like walking into a psychedelic sweet shop with all the flavours of the universe on display.” –Pete Fowler, Seahawks

Amongst the collection’s many diverse interpretations is Chris Watson’s reworking of ‘Dive In’ Watson, one of the world’s leadingsound recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena and founder of post punk outfit Cabaret Voltaire, describes the field recordings he  included in his intriguing mix:

“I used Weddell seals singing at the intro recorded under the Antartic sea ice. The rhythms of the Humbolt current around the Galapagos Islands recorded with DPA hydrophones. Singing grey seals recorded out on the Farne Islands, Northumberland and the processed voices of Orca, killer whales, recorded in the sea of Norway.”

The images that make up the cover and boxed set package were created by celebrated young artist Leif Podhajsky who has previously artworked releases by Lykke Li, Tame Impala and Grimes.

About the Artists

Connan Mockasin

Connan Mockasin has a deliciously off-kilter and gloriously idiosyncratic worldview. His ingenious approach to invention and a unique charm caught the attention of Erol Alkan, who signed Connan to his label Phantasy. Connan is most known for his eccentricity, his miasma of psychedelic tangents, jazz interludes and echoing guitars.

Cherrystones is the sound of psychedelia-soundtracks-folk-rock-prog-noise-moog-AND-library-records. Music that takes its inspiration from rock n roll and applied in a hip-hop context. For the last two years he has been amassing the choicest cuts that could very possibly put Madlib to shame.

Chris Watson (The Pressure Ridges)

Watson is one of the world’s leading recorders of wildlife and natural phenomena, he edits his field recordings into a filmic narrative. The unearthly groaning of ice in an Icelandic glacier is a classic example of, in Watson’s words, putting a microphone where you can’t put your ears. His works ‘Weather Report’ was named in The Guardian’s 1000 Albums to Hear Before You Die List. He is previously known for forming post punk outfit Cabaret Voltaire.

Daniel Avery

While Daniel Avery may be better known for his residency behind the decks at London institution fabric, he is fast rising as a respected producer. His induction into the fabriclive mix series provides compelling evidence of this, a dizzy trip that highlights Avery’s skill as both a curator and a creator of some of the most inventive and forward thinking electronic sounds emerging today.

Blanck Mass

Blanck Mass is Benjamin John Power, a young musician in thrall to Carl Sagan, Ennio Morricone and the infinity of nature. His work is themed around complexity of the natural world. The debut album ‘Blanck Mass’ was produced at home in London 2010 featuring a collection of warm analogue synths, heavy sub and deep drones.

Seahawks were formed by Jon Tye & Pete Fowler back in 2009. Spurred on by their love of Yacht Rock and Cosmic Synth they somehow fused the two, resulting in a series of now super rare 12’s compiled on the Ocean Trippin CD. They remixed Badly Drawn Boy and Born Blonde, before releasing the ‘Another Summer With Seahawks’ collection and a 7” featuring pop sensation Autre Ne Veut. ‘Invisible Sunrise’ followed in 2011 along with lots more remixes.

Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall’s extraordinary twenty-five year career in music has been characterized by a series of unique partnerships. He has released nineteen albums, thirty or so EPs and singles plus more than two hundred and fifty remixes.

Andy Blake

Founded the legendary Dissident label famous for releasing analogue oddities on quality vinyl pressings from emerging as well as established artists. Now sadly defunct, Blake continues pushing music boundaries as a dj remixer.

Tadd Mullinix makes spaced-out house tracks as JTC (James T Cotton), one of his many guises devoted to a specific production style. This particular alias debuted in 2001 on Ghostly International with the “Mind Your Manners” single. He has since appeared on Ghostly’s State of the Union compilation and released another 4 EPs and album titles ‘Like No One’ in 2008.

Track Of The Day: Dead Sons – Hangman

‘Remember remember, the 5th of November’ is how Dead Sons announced their latest single ‘Hangman’, and it is certainly not one to forget about! Taken from their forthcoming debut album ‘The Hollers and The Hymns’, the single represents a real coming of age for the band. Their honed sinful indie sound is more US desert than UK city, it’s menacing and delightfully monopolising and is epitomised within ‘Hangman’.

‘The Hollers and The Hymns’ has not received and official release date but we are sure it is on the horizon, we can’t wait any longer.

Track Of The Day: The Hazy Eyed Smiles – Love Rages

Potentially the Track Of The Day with the longest title and potentially one of the best. What can we say about The Hazy Eyed Smiles? They have a solid indie sound with n edge of psychedelia – a sound not easy to produce – yet they hit it off nicely. This song is just a mere drop in the ocean, their Sound Cloud page should take up the rest of your day.

Review: TOY – “TOY”

Stream the brand new album HERE.

Let it be said that one of the most fashionable forms of guitar music at the moment is psychedelic rock. The Horrors grew to represent that sound within their third release ‘Skying’ and more recently, Richard Hawley embarked on a similar sound in 2012 with ‘Standing At The Sky’s Edge’. TOY have done the same. They have established themselves to have a popular sound on the live circuit with impressive slots at Reading & Leeds, Latitude, Bestival and supporting The Horrors. Much comparison can be drawn between TOY and The Horrors who incidentally are also good friends.

Three of the five members of the London based band are former members of Joe Lean & The Jing Jang Jong who have embarked on a new career, which in our opinion is going to be nothing but successful.

The impressive first single they released in 2011 ‘Left Myself Behind‘ was limited to 100 pressings which remarkably sold out in a day which we believe, has set the stall out for the band and their album will be just as successful. Having garnered much deserved hype from NME and other critics alike, the bands latest single (released today, 3rd September) has been a very popular selection within our Track Of The Day catalogue.

The album itself opens with the irrepressible ‘Colour’s Running Out’. The distortion pedals are out, the riff is as contagiously infective as chicken pocks and the vocals drift in and out of the track with consummate ease. ‘Colour’s Running Out’ sets out the stall for the rest of the album and sets you up for a moody yet sparkly outing. Think dim lights and leather jackets with sequin trousers and you will truly comprehend what this record is about.

Mesmeric track ‘Dead And Gone’ is another of the strongest offerings on the album. It’s a 7 and a half minute epic track which unfortunately completely flies by when you listen to it. As we have done over the past week or so, you’ll lose a lot of your life to this track as you will listen to it again and again. The track itself is the epitome of simplicity, yet completely entrancing. For the large part its dark and moody, it’s black, until five minutes in where it explodes into an outro of an ocean of colour and rainbows.

Recent single ‘Lose My Way’ is also an album highlight and displays a softer side of emotion, as does the distorted sounding ‘Make It Mine’.

However, as the saying goes, the best is saved until last. Curtain closer ‘Kopter’ is a NINE MINUTE long song. But don’t let this put you off, it’s a full on explosion of sound that will leave you wanting more from one of the best things to come out of 2012.

The View From The Music is9/10 – On a personal level, you’ve waited all your life for this record. Sure comparisons with The Horrors are going to follow TOY around for a long time but they have an astute, share worthy sound that will see them become one of indie-rocks greatest exports for years to come.
